Celebrating Morfydd Owen (1891-1918)

A programme of first modern performances of choral music by Welsh composer Morfydd Owen, marking the 100th anniversary of her untimely death in 1918. The concert will include music by her contemporaries Claude Debussy and Charles Hubert Parry, who died in the same year.

Grupo de Música Contemporânea de Lisboa

Founded in 1970 by the composer Jorge Peixinho, the Grupo de Música Contemporânea de Lisboa (GMCL) was the first Portuguese contemporary music ensemble, and has played a historic role in the vanguard of opening up Portuguese society to the musical aesthetics of its time.  Its first public appearance was in the Sintra Festival in 1970, and it has since then been a constant presence in Portugal, including recordings for radio and television.  In 1972 it made its first trip abroad, to take part in the Royan Festival of Contemporary Art.

Three Figures: Cardiff University Contemporary Music Group, Robert Fokkens (director)

The Contemporary Music Group explores vocal and instrumental music by three major figures in British music, Master of the Queen’s Music Judith Weir, Belize-born composer and song-writer Errollyn Wallen, and Wales-based flautist and composer Lynne Plowman.

Perhaps best known as a composer of operas, which he retired from composing at the tender age of 38, Rossini also composed a number of instrumental works. Today we have representation from both worlds.  The overture to The Silken Ladder is vivacious and sparkling, while his theme and variations for clarinet and chamber orchestra has similarly been popular with clarinettists and orchestras since its first outing.
