Professor David Wyn Jones is one of today’s leading Vienna scholars. To celebrate his recently published book, Music in Vienna: 1700,1800,1900, the 2016/17 concert series reflects on the familiar image of Vienna as a musical city. Vienna has long been associated with many of the most significant composers in Western music – from Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, through the Strauss family, Brahms, Bruckner and Wolf, to Mahler, Lehár, Schoenberg and Webern. The Carducci Quartet perform three works tonight, two by Vienna-based composers, Mozart and Beethoven and one by Handel, who was London-based but influenced the musical life of Vienna long into the modern era.
