Lokkhi Terra and Dele Sosimi present CubAfrobeat

Lokkhi Terra is a London-based world music collective. Their music combines Bangladeshi folk tunes with Afro-beat and Cuban rumba. Established by pianist Kishon Khan, the band played its first gig at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall in 2006. In this programme they will join forces with Dele Sosimi and members of his orchestra.  This is what the band says: ‘CubAfrobeat is a groovetrain, travelling between Lagos,Nigeria and Havana, Cuba, a very special and in many ways unique performance featuring members of both Lokhhi Terra & Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Orchestra. Musicians who are regarded as the cream of the London Afrobeat, AfroCuban and Jazz music scene fusing Rumba, Afrobeat, Timba and Jazz together on to one stage. Numbers on stage make that unique difference.’

Finding Fela Screening and Q&A
Optometry Building, Cardiff University, 3 October, 7pm
Part of the Watch Africa 2015: the Wales African Film Festival – http://www.watch-africa.co.uk/young-africans/

A look at the life and music of Nigerian Fela Kuti. Dele Sosimi, Fela’s former bandmate, will be taking part in a Q&A after the screening.

Finding Fela tells the story of Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s life, his music, his social and political importance. He created a new musical movement, Afrobeat, using that forum to express his revolutionary political opinions against the dictatorial Nigerian government of the 1970s and 1980s. His influence helped bring a change towards democracy in Nigeria and promoted Pan Africanist politics to the world. The power and potency of Fela’s message is completely current today and is expressed in the political movements of oppressed people, embracing Fela’s music and message in their struggle for freedom. Finding Fela was directed by the Academy Award winning director, Alex Gibney.
