Jazz at the University: Huw Warren and Friends – More Tails for Wales
04/11/2017, 7:00 pm - 9:15 pm

Huw Warren – Piano
Iain Ballamy – Saxaphone
Steve Watts – Bass
Martin France – Drums
In an exclusive premiere for the Jazz at the University series, leading UK composer/pianist Huw Warren presents a new project of original music with long time collaborators Ballamy, Watts and France. Tails for Wales was a 2014 touring project (featuring Mark Lockheart and Maria Lamburn) that emphasised new music that had direct connections to Wales.
As one of the most high profile Welsh jazz musicians, Warren has always been interested in taking inspiration from both his Gower upbringing and his current domicile in the heart of Snowdonia. More Tails for Wales is the latest in a long line of projects that reflect this, including Duw Y Wyr (Welsh Hymns with Lleuwen Steffan from 2004) and Do Not Go Gentle (A Dylan Thomas suite from the DT100 festival of 2015)
All four musicians have been at the cutting edge of the UK and European jazz scenes since the early 1990’s, and have worked extensively together in various combinations. Ballamy and Warren record together for ECM as part of the Quercus trio, and France and Warren have recorded together extensively both as Perfect Houseplants and on a string of Huw’s solo records including 100’s of Things a Boy can Make (2003) and Hermeto+ 2009
Huw Warren has written for Jazz and classical groups including Perfect Houseplants, The Orlando Consort, Royal Shakespeare Company, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Welsh Chamber Orchestra, LPO Renga Ensemble, National Youth Brass Band of Wales, Pamela Thorby, Elena Riu and the ABRSM Jazz syllabus. Winner of the coveted BBC Jazz Award for Innovation in 2005, he has also received an ACW Creative Wales award
