Cardiff University / ESTA String Day
Sunday 22 April 2018 10.00 am -5.00pm
University Concert Hall, Cardiff University School of Music, Corbett Road, Cardiff
The School of Music is delighted to host its fourth String Day in collaboration with the internationally renowned European String Teachers’ Association (ESTA) to promote excellence in string playing for students and teachers.
Led by distinguished professional players and teachers, Rowena Calvert, Robin Stowell and Pam Redman, the day-long series of events comprises interactive workshops including sessions on technique, masterclasses, talks and directed ensemble playing on specially commissioned works for string ensemble in Concerto Grosso formation by Cardiff University student composers.
Dr Pam Redman, physician and professional violinist will give an illustrated lecture on how the muscles and bones of the body relate to technique. Professor Robin Stowell and Rowena Calvert will be the Concerto Grosso soloists and giving masterclasses.
This focus of this year’s technical issues is based on ideas designed at the ESTA Summer School 2017 by Pam Redman and Ted Wilson exploring:
- Left Hand pizzicato
- Hammering on and off
- How loud should I play in an orchestra?
- How do I find the right note at the beginning of a piece
- Finger patterns – why are some easier than others?
Masterclasses will cater for all levels above Grade 3. Any ESTA member may put pupils forwards to participate but places are limited. Members of the ESTA Cardiff Branch coordinated by Richard Barlow will select the participants. Cost for Masterclasses is £20 (except for Cardiff University and RWCMD students) and you must provide your own accompanist.
As before, adult learners are welcome.
Registration: please register via the ESTA website.
