Cardiff University’s Gamelan Ensemble – Nogo Abang- travel to Surakarta, Indonesia

Cardiff University’s Gamelan Ensemble depart today for a 21-day study tour to Surakarta, Indonesia.

Members of the ensemble have been studying Javanese Gamelan under the expert guidance of Dr Jonathan Roberts for between 1-3 years. The ensemble rehearses weekly during the academic year at St David’s Hall, Cardiff.

During their time in Surakarta the group will receive tuition at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts, perform with professional gamelan orchestras, take part in gamelan lessons in primary schools, visit temples and attend performances by both professional and amateur gamelan orchestras.

We will keep you updated with the ensemble’s progress in Surakarta.

The study tour is made possible by funding from Cardiff University’s Global Opportunities Centre and is led by Dr Amanda Villepastour and Dr Jonathan Roberts.
