In 1613 the Procurators of St Mark’s, Venice, dearly hoped that Claudio Monteverdi would restore the musical supremacy of Venetian church music established by Willaert, Rore and Zarlino. They would not be disappointed. Monteverdi not only put St Mark’s back on the musical map, but left a legacy comprising, arguably, some of the most beautiful sacred works ever written.
